Abstract

In this article, Chenhong Xu reflects on her Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) training journey, navigating the tension between methodological rigor and therapeutic authenticity. Initially drawn to ISTDP’s structured frameworks, she encountered challenges with rigidity, sparking internal conflicts between compliance and personal style. Through peer collaboration, diverse mentorship, and integrating complementary modalities, Xu reconciled these tensions, embracing the "wounded healer" archetype to deepen emotional attunement. Her evolution highlights balancing disciplined techniques with intuitive, client-centered care, underscoring critical reflection and adaptability. This narrative advocates for continuous learning, collegial support, and synthesizing diverse perspectives to cultivate an authentic therapeutic voice, bridging structured methods with individualized practice in psychotherapy.
